Meet Uriel

Born in Bukhara, Uzbekistan, in 1962, Uriel Gurgov learned shoemaking in the city’s workshops. His father introduced him to local craftsmen, known as ustad, who taught him their trades in exchange for work.

In the early 1990s, Uriel’s family joined many other Bukharian Jewish families leaving Uzbekistan. They visited their ancestors’ graves before beginning a difficult journey through Moscow. After costly payments to border police and airport officials, they reached the United States on January 21, 1993.

A year later, help from family and friends and a $15,000 bank loan allowed him to buy his shoe repair shop. The trade he learned in Bukhara became his livelihood in New York. With his home nearby and his wife, children, and grandchildren around him, Uriel says he is grateful for the life he has built.

His work has included custom shoes for Britney Spears and Patrick Dempsey, as well as commissions for the casts of Boardwalk Empire and Gossip Girl. Alongside those projects, he continues to handle everyday repairs, from worn shoes to watches and jewelry.

Whether it’s a custom pair or an everyday repair, Uriel starts by listening. He cares about how your shoes fit and feel as much as how they look. A good pair, he believes, should be comfortable enough to wear again and again.
